My Kitten Has A Bloated Stomach

Agriculture of Lebanon to its knees. Shortage of seeds.

In Lebanon we are still accounts to understand How long the war cost in economic terms. According to a FAO report released today, the damages and losses agriculture, fisheries and forestry sector caused by the hostilities of last summer would amount to $ 280 million. The conflict affected the agriculture sector directly, because of the bombings that have damaged or destroyed crops, livestock and agricultural equipment . But much more important, according to the FAO, was the indirect economic impact of the conflict in terms of lost markets and places lavoro.I bombings have targeted directed mainly at southern Lebanon and southern suburbs of Beirut, among the poorest areas of the country. In southern Lebanon, agriculture accounts for almost 70 percent of the sources of household income. The greatest losses are attributed to lack of access to fields during the conflict, which has coincided with a crucial time for the harvest of some crops intended for 'export (especially fruit and potatoes). According to the report, much of this year's production has been rotting in the fields. Moreover, many agricultural fields and pastures unusable figs will not remove unexploded bombs. This is the situation for 25 percent of the land coltivata del sud del Libano, dove il totale delle perdite finanziarie del settore agricolo ammonta a circa 232 milioni di dollari.

Fewer sales of corn seed

Il dato Sales of seeds produced by - stresses the AIS - is expected to have a better idea about the real domestic investment and production actually available on the market, since the official statistics and estimates from other parties are not at all convincing spread . L ' AIS survey on maize seed has seen this year a study, prepared at a market share of seed , concerning the disposal of production and classes of maturity. E 'showed that for the production of grain is about 75% of the surface maidicola, while the production of silage and the remaining 25%. As for the difference in earliness of materials grown, the market split between medium-early varieties (FAO class 200, 300 and 400) with about 19%, medium-late varieties (FAO class 500 to 600) with 60% and late varieties (FAO class 700 ) with 21%. And 'the second year after the CAP reform started in 2004 in Italy maidicola that the surface undergoes a contraction. And with the recent significant increase autumn sowing of wheat surfaces, especially in the North, does not leave much room for a possible recovery of maize in the next campaign. Article on

use of seeds in organic farming

Organic farming involves the use of seed obtained organically.
For farmers and businesses can more easily find seed produced organically, Member States should establish an online database in which seed suppliers can register seed and seed potatoes , produced according to organic farming methods, which intend to enter the market. If not available
seeds of species that want to produce an organic farmer varieties are not available or appropriate, you can ask the control for an exemption poter utilizzare sementi di tipo non biologico.

controls on imported rice

After the discovery of rice imported from the U.S. containing unauthorized GMOs are taken in Europe the "counter-test" customs or "entry points" to each consignment of rice "long grain" from the United States to verify the veracity of the certification GMO - free americane.Lo issued by the Community measure has a , welcomed the positive feedback Diego Fury, director of Novara Coldiretti and Vco, whose territory is one of the leading Italian rice (photo Novara).
"It 's a measure aimed at ensuring transparency and security to consumers, capable of dissipating latent fears that can only hurt the market and, consequently, our businesses," said Furia. " Coldiretti has always supported the need of transparency measures on the labels of packages of rice , and what to highlight in particular the high quality of our national product, the best of Europe and the world now, consumers must be renewed an invitation to choose rice "made in Italy "in order to bring to the table without any fear," transparency, quality, traceability and food safety "... all in a single grain of rice. "But back to Community controls: the decision, already operational, has been taken by the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health on a proposal from the Commission: the arrival of rice contaminated in several European countries (France, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Great Britain), demonstrated the size and severity of the alarm, which goes on to engage even the delay with which the U.S. authorities provided information to the European Union and the recent discovery of false statements GMO-free, made in America and demands by the EU Commission to stem the flow. Complex situation, therefore, that the same U.S. farmers acknowledged the decision to sue the company that seeds contaminated with GM crops: the most damage to U.S. producers are attributable to the ban on imports of U.S. rice by the Japanese authorities, who after the onset of the anomaly has effectively closed the mercati.La hope all is that it can finally close a story started a long time, or since July 31 when the company Bayer, producer of GM rice LLRICE601 unauthorized informed the U.S. authorities only days after they have informed the Commission Ue.E 'was launched as the rule requiring the presentation of una certificazione che garantisca l'assenza di ogm per tutte le importazioni di riso mentre ora, con i contro-test, ci sarà un elemento di sicurezza in più a garantire i mercati e i consumatori europei.“Ma il vero obiettivo – conclude il direttore Furia – è giungere presto alla definizione dell’Igp “Valle del Po” per il prodotto degli oltre 200 comuni di Piemonte e Lombardia produttori di un riso che sarà certificato e promosso come essenza della qualità e della rintracciabilità italiana.L’Iter sta attraversando ora le necessarie fasi burocratiche, poi davvero si potrà scrivere una nuova, importante pagina nella storia più che secolare della nostra risicoltura”.

Manifesto is born free from GMOs

No to GMOs, defense of traditions, biodiversity, culture and territory. These are the values of ' and Agriculture' s Italian food looking to the future set out in the manifesto promoted by the Council of Human Genetic Mario Capanna, signed by 18 organizations, representatives of the agricultural world , as the environmental , crafts, retail, and consumer science, presented yesterday in Rome, and which has now joined the Minister policy agricultural Paolo De Castro. "The goal - explained Shack - is to bring the food and agriculture at the center of development. It is time indeed - he said - that the primary sector back to play a central role in Italy with a consequent reorganization of expenditure commitments and the political government. " Anti-GM is the chapter closest to your face. The first step in the sign of the 18 organizations is to press the government to oppose the amendment that the EU admits GM contamination of organic crops, even in . "Just this amendment is to skip the altar of the much-touted possibility of coexistence between GM and non GM crops' attacks Campana. For organizations that adhere to the manifesto, the government should not only vote against but must find alliances winning against GMOs. Today the coalition is free from GM to Autoconvocate Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food to address the issues related to EU legislation on GMOs. And the raid has borne fruit. Zero tolerance on GM in the biological and adherence to the manifesto on GMOs. This is what said Minister of Agriculture and Forestry , Paolo De Castro, speaking to the General Assembly of the GE-Free coalition that came together to discuss the proposed regulation Consiglio europeo, relativo alla produzione e all'etichettatura dei prodotti biologici che dovrebbe sostituire il regolamento esistente, in vigore dal 1991. Fin dalla prima versione, rileva il Consiglio dei diritti genetici, nel regolamento è stato introdotto il principio secondo il quale ai prodotti biologici verrebbero applicate le stesse soglie di contaminazione da Ogm stabilite per i prodotti convenzionali, ovvero lo 0,9%.«Su questo daremo battaglia – ha aggiunto De Castro – anche per quanto riguarda le sementi e se riusciamo a togliere dal campo i frankenstein-food faremo già dei passi avanti, unire il mondo animale e vegetale è eticamente scorretto e su questo potremo trovare condivisione even the Catholic world, you can argue, however, GM is on the second generation, intra-species. " Now, the broad array of forces that has set in motion relies on "commitments and behaviors of the Italian government - said Mario Capanna - both in Rome and in Brussels." And in the Community, the minister hopes that it will be possible to move ahead, in particular under the German presidency, from which "we will have a hand," De Castro said as he met yesterday the German Agriculture Minister Horst Seehofer.

Agribosco: the ancient Umbrian tradition at the table

by GreenPlanet
The seed used by growers of the Consortium is provided and guaranteed by Agribosco who is also the project "Old Seeds", that the care and enhancement of seed originating in Umbria, its biodiversity. "With the cooperation of several scientific research institutes of international reputation," says Marzio Presciutti Cinti, general manager of Agribosco "We have brought in more than 700 varieties of purity Spelt Triticum Dicoccum native to the valleys of Umbria. Subsequent studies conducted in collaboration with the University of Perugia have allowed us then to select six varieties, with the help of nutritional Salut-test, revealed excellent glycemic index and gastric emptying, and thus good capacity to facilitate the absorption of sugar and digestion. Our goal is to combat the increasingly rampant problem of intolerance and food allergies , which may find its origin in the modification of the structure of the seed protein and gluten. This important work is his fixation with the Identity Card of product, situated right on the front label. The Charter Identity is the name of the grower member of the Consortium, the place of cultivation and the amount realized in this batch. In addition, the production chain is certified according to UNI 10939-2001, a highly detailed set of rules that ensure consumers are not only the origin of the product, but also on all intermediate processing of the raw materials undergo, from the field to to the finished product. The latest in home Agribosco called Agri-Bio-Pellet a novelty in the field of alternative sources of heating, depending . E 'increasingly popular in fact, recently the use of domestic boilers or fired Monthly pellet. In this respect, Agri-Bio-Pellet is the only alternative organic sector. The pellets in question in fact, are made exclusively with husks, and bran cereals from organic farming. "This is just one of many moments of our work is mainly based on absolute respect for the cycles of nature and that has led us to develop the 'organic greenest and most pristine areas of central Italy," says Marzio Presciutti Cinti "indistrializzate away from large areas of crops and land intensive and conventional. In doing so we try to do our part to prevent the abandonment of the countryside restoring value a pure and authentic product. Our entire organization is geared to achieve two primary objectives: product quality and process efficiency, eliminating waste and diseconomies that inevitably would harm consumers. " Article on

Trade between Romania and China

The volume of trade in seeds between China and Romania in 2006 could exceed two billion dollars, of which 250 to 300 million could be covered by exports of Romania. This was stated by Radu Zaharia, head of the Directorate General for Bilateral Relations of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) under the Romania-China forum.
During the period from January to June, there have been trade worth 995.1 million dollars, the share of exports to Romania was 102.5 million. The representative of the Ministry of Commerce of China in Bucharest together with a delegation of 11 representatives and 22 businessmen said that the Chinese authorities are interested in diversifying the range of seed products marketed with Romania, making the country a important element in promoting China's relations with Europe.
The highlight of the forum was the signing of seven agreements cooperation between Romania and Chinese companies. the total value of these contracts was $ 80 million, of which 53 contracts are actually signed, the rest covered by letters of intent and preliminary bilateral agreements. Contracts will also focus on the supply of steel, chemicals, cells and, of course, the seed .

seed oil pills

The differences between the various types of seeds for vegetable oils (derived mainly from semi and then also called seed oils ) concerns mainly the fatty acid composition in . Most vegetable oils contain mostly mono-and polyunsaturated fats and low in saturated fat, the exception " tropical oils" that do contain a large percentage of saturated fat. The
fatty acid composition in seed oil not only varies from species to species, but also depends on climatic conditions and soil type. It can also be varied by genetically modifying the seeds of plants.
peanut oil
This oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant Arachis hypogaea the family of legumes. It has a fatty acid composition similar to olive oil because it contains many acids monounsaturated and polyunsaturated few. This makes it quite stable at high temperatures, so it is suitable for frying.
oil sunflower
is extracted from the seeds of Helianthus annuus of the Composite family. The cultivation of sunflower is typical of Eastern Europe, but in recent years has spread to Europe and Italy. L ' oil sunflower seeds contains a very high percentage of polyunsaturated fats, particularly linoleic acid (75%), and a considerable amount of vitamin E (68 mg / 100 g). It should be easy to meet rancidity due to the high degree of unsaturation therefore not suitable for cooking and frying, and should be kept refrigerated in opaque bottles. There sunflower oils derived from genetically modified plants having a modified fatty acid content in favor of monounsaturated fats: They are used for frying, especially in North America, thanks to greater stability at high temperatures.
flax seed oil is extracted from
seeds of the plant Linum usitatissimum , widely used until a few years ago to produce garments. Unlike other vegetable oils rich in omega-6 oils, linseed oil is very rich in linolenic acid, il capostipite dei grassi omega 3.
Anch'esso should be refrigerated in opaque bottles.
oil seed rape
is extracted from the seeds of Brassica napus oleifera and Brassica campestris , the family of cruciferous vegetables. The oil obtained contains a considerable amount of erucic acid, a substance which is metabolized with difficulty by the human body and accumulates in the fat of the heart muscle, causing alterations. The law requires that in ' mixed seed oil and margarine is not present in a quantity greater than 5% erucic acid. Since erucic acid is actually a poison to our body, because to allow its use also only a small percentage? The answer is economic: the ' rapeseed oil is cheap and its use is widespread in oils and fats used by food manufacturers.
sesame seed oil is extracted from
seeds of Sesamum indicum , is characterized by an equal percentage of oleic acid and linoleic acid (40%). The scent and flavor, is used in many preparations of oriental cuisine.
tropical oils
are the oils derived from coconut palm . Unlike other vegetable oils , all very rich of mono-and polyunsaturated fats, these oils are rich in saturated fat, a special characteristic of animal fats. They are not for sale for human consumption, but they are much used by the food (under the heading " vegetable oils) because they are inexpensive and allow products to last a long time, thanks to the low proportion of unsaturated fats. It is usually used as cooking oil from restaurants to the excellent stability characteristics, which are often misused: fried foods with palm oil are acceptable (in terms of taste) after a week of heavy use! I saturated fat, as is well known, are more harmful to heart health and arteries compared with mono and polyunsaturated fats. In reality, only long-chain saturated fats significantly raise blood cholesterol values, not the medium-chain: not all tropical oils are bad for your arteries!

Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the palm, Elaeis giuneensis , is characterized by a high content of long-chain saturated fats, in particular palmitic acid, the same content in butter. vegetable oil is more harmful for the heart and arteries , just because of long-chain saturated fats.

palm kernel oil is extracted from the seeds of palm , Elaeis giuneensis , also contains lots of saturated fat but unlike palm oil they are short-chain, especially lauric and myristic, much less harmful to the arteries of palmitic acid.

Coconut oil is extracted from the pulp of coconuts, is rich in medium-chain fatty acids (MCT), and then, like oil, palm kernel, does not represent a danger for the heart and arteries .

seed - HOW TO ASSESS THE SEED (6th part)

farmer TIPS FOR ASSESSING SEED
To assess the germination and purity the seed the farmer may :
1 - Use germinatoi quite simple and rudimentary (sand or filter paper in a closed transparent container), kept at constant temperature and humidity for a few days and check 'attitude seed germination and the speed with which the birth occurs planting
2 - Developing a simple magnifying glass and a lamp to
2.1 - in the presence mass of seeds and foreign material;
2.2 - observe the conformation Seed ( irregular or shriveled seeds often are a sign of maturation that took place in adverse environment, harvesting too early, poor curing);
2.3 - evaluate the color (must be characteristic of the species and the variety, the colors are pale green or their of immature seeds collected , redness or darkening of the legume seeds slam the seed is old, the non-uniformity in color may suspect a mixture of seeds of various origins and ages);
2.4 - the luminance (often the seeds become opaque with age);
2.5-check ' integrity of the seed (a condition necessary for it to germinate);
2.6 - determine the weight and volume (if significant abundance indicate di materiali di riserva nel seme e quindi la possibilità di nutrire più a lungo le piantine nascenti ; queste caratteristiche non vanno però sopravvalutate, in quanto anche da semi piccoli si ottengono colture normali).

jute seed - The new challenge of the XXI Century

The jute material 100% recyclable and biodegradable , is going more and more popular then in various areas of our daily lives and our economic system, especially with regard to food and environmental sectors . The "golden fiber " ("golden fiber", this is the name that is commonly called) has no impact on the environment of any kind during the entire process and for its qualities of strength and resistance arises as alternative to polluting and non-biodegradable materials or synthetic fibers and plastics. Because of its versatility, the "golden fiber" is applicable in many fields: textile, non-textile, packaging. While regain more and more important the bags of all sizes, for use food, lately the jute are becoming increasingly popular in the geo-textile sector as a natural alternative to all the synthetic fibers which competes in strength and effectiveness while maintaining the strengths as natural features such as biodegradability. Jute geotextiles are invaluable to stabilize the soil surface, protect and promote the development of seed and plantations as part of greening operations.

In What Episode Does Bulma

1, World Forum - Stay out of WTO

In Europa, ogni tre minuti scompare un'azienda agricola, negli ultimi 40 anni 7 milioni di superficie sono been subtracted to ' farming and the number of farmers has halved over the past 25 years. At the same time in the last fifty years have seen an increase in agricultural inputs : EU farmers use inorganic fertilizers more than tripled since 1960 and 320,000 tons of pesticides a year, or about 2 kg per hectare. We are witnessing the intensification and concentration of agricultural production , and further cuts in the Common Agricultural Policy, will encourage further abandonment of the so-called marginal lands (hills and mountains which represent 85% of Italian territory) to lowland areas and to products low value added work, with excesses of chemistry, water, low-quality products that will go to swell the popular suburbs, near the headquarters of the discount penniless university canteens or workers for eating more and more selective.
In Europe, water consumption for agriculture increased exponentially, and are around 60% of total withdrawals, in Italy the water used to irrigate more than 30 billion cubic meters a year. The EU agricultural
choices are increasingly linked to international markets, new factors such as monetary fundamentalism continue spending cuts for the sacred defense of the Stability Pact. Choices dictated to the WTO tend to focus on crops with high yield per hectare highly water demanding. The agricultural practices based on agriculture hyperintensity deplete the soil, with all the ensuing consequences are erosion, blocking the natural replenishment of water supplies, loss of soil fertility, with further increase of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, pollution from which of freshwater and marine.
The productivity of the hybrids introduced with the "green revolution " price was high energy inputs and a large outdoor water consumption, massive use of fossil fuels in cars and agrochemicals. These factors have created and continue to feed on the one hand, the dependence farmers by agribusiness corporations and other serious problems for biodiversity and for the general health of the territories and populations. The situation could worsen dramatically if the EU decided under the pressures of agricultural and food companies and the United States to promote the marketing of genetically modified seeds strongly pumps.
social movements of the most remote areas of the world but there's a clear indication about the value of different agricultural practices, agriculture out of WTO rules (the food is not a commodity), a different role of public research, the ' peasant agriculture guarantor of food sovereignty, recovery and enhancement of agricultural cultures that enrich the soil, enhance the use of local varieties heritage of centuries of farming knowledge, variety often have genetic resistance to parasites, environmental stresses and less water demanding. The subtraction of
seed and patents from the hands of multinationals, instead considering Heritage (request made by the peasant movements in Porto Alegre in UNESCO) can be chosen key in restoring a balanced relationship with the environment and return the control of agricultural production and their quality in the hands of the people, taking them to the multinationals.
Fights for the struggles for land and water can be welded in the re-appropriation by the citizens, the right to govern the territory in which they live. It is important that the principle of food sovereignty and the right to assert themselves as the good life values in general regulate relations between countries and peoples.
agriculture in all its meanings in relation to man-nature relationship is crucial to stem the progressive encroachment of vital resources and at the same time, promote new values. In this battle for the first human right to life but also good health understood as what is produced life on earth, and how it occurs, is central. And a good use of water is a prerequisite for it to realize a 'altragricoltura "to another company.

withdraw approval from an inspection body in USA

The National Organic Program (NOP) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture revoked the accreditation of the American Food Safety Institute International (AFSI). The organization, based in Chippewa Falls was charged with seven serious violations of the rules of the NOP. In a statement, the chairman of AFSI, Dr. Karl Kolb objected to "the recent articles with errors and misconceptions about our participation in activities that come under the National Organic Program. According to Kolb, "a recent audit of the NOP has found some non-compliance in our procedures for which there have been requests that we have taken corrective action within 30 days. We have submitted our reply in writing with a list of corrective actions and the new documentation. We have not received feedback on the assessment by the USDA of our response. " He also held for allegedly improperly certified a producer who had used non-organic seed as a blatant falsehood. As provided for in the withdrawal of authorization, the principal leaders of AFS and the persons involved in the activity is prohibited any direction and participation in the certification of organic producers, processing firms, farmers and gatherers of wild fruit for three years. Producers and processors to date certified by AFS (in all about 30 companies) can no longer use the trademark on their products of AFS may be made by reference to the certification of AFS on their commercial documents and advertising. The NOP allows 30 days to replace labels and promotional material by inserting references to the new body. Companies are still considered certified until revoked, suspended or waived certification (the USDA is looking into practices of all businesses certified by AFSI). The USDA has also ordered the body of eight companies to reimburse any expenditure necessary for re-certification with another supervisory body . The main reason for the revocation of the authorization is in identifying conflicts of interest rules prohibit the NOP to a certification body to provide consultancy services to its customers for a period of at least 12 months before certification. The AFSI was accredited in accordance with NOP February 10, 2003.

The CIA carries out an atlas of producers who have revived traditions that have disappeared

La Confederazione italiana agricoltori (Cia) pensa che gli agricoltori siano gli ultimi paladini della biodiversità, i «custodi dei flavors and a knowledge and gather in the 'Atlas of seed lost "all the farmers who" have revived traditions, cultivation, uses and secular culture, preserving seeds now unknown, raising the risk that animals 'extinction and continue to prepare and to produce films that you are losing track, and instead, have been the power of past generations, enriching the tables and delighting palates. The national president of the CIA, Giuseppe Politi has already presented the contents of a proposal to Parliament for the legal recognition of these farmers and to finance the activities of conservation and production of traditional crops and traditional. "Our aim - said Politi - is to promote the wise and onerous work of many farmers who have long devoted to conservation of biodiversity , the protection of a culture and a history which dates centuries. The implementation of the Atlas is not, therefore, only a guide or 'handbook' to the agricultural and food paths of the past linked to the territory, but should also include the proper recognition of those who chose to work for a ' rich and diverse agriculture for the preservation of biodiversity rural , to give value to our rural culture. " The defense of agricultural biodiversity is a priority for the CIA. That explains how "the last hundred years in the world are missing three-quarters of the genetic diversity of agricultural crops." And currently over 1350 are in danger of extinction. "Only in Italy in the late eighteenth century there were more than 8000 varieties of fruit , while today it comes to just under 2000," states the CIA. Apples are the most striking example: "At the beginning of 1900 in Europe were known varieties 5000. Now do not exceed 1800. A figure for Italy to understand the picture: about 80 percent of the apples produced belongs to only four groups of cultivars: two Americans (the red and yellow Red Delicious Golden Delicious), an Australian (the green Granny Smith) and one New Zealand (the bi-color Gala). It should not be better for the vegetable species with more than 90% of seeds of commercial varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, melons, watermelons, and many are patented hybrid varieties of which more than 35 years (3 % of total) at risk of disappearing forever.

and cultivation of Bt cotton seed, how much it costs?

of Nicola Nosengo
Opponents of the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture does, almost always, from concerns about their possible effects on health and the environment. But if these arguments now being compounded by even the suspicion that in reality GM crops are more expensive than traditional, life becomes very hard for their supporters. For this noise did the news come in these days of a search organized by the American Cornell University on cultivation of GM cotton in China , which showed that after seven years of application of these seed, Chinese farmers see substantially eroded the profits that had first taken from the reduced use of pesticides.
China was the first country to use extensively Bt cotton, which is genetically modified to contain the toxin produced by Bacillus thuringiensis , killing the main plant pests, the larva known as bollworm. As reported by Per Pinstrup-Andersen of Cornell at the annual meeting of the American Agricultural Economics Association in Long Beach, California, for the first three years, 481 farmers involved in the research had reduced pesticide use by 70 percent compared to the cultivation traditional, and had increased profits by 36 percent. However, within four years found themselves having to use the same amount of conventional pesticides producers up to earn 8 per cent less of them since the Bt seed cost three times more than traditional ones. The reason? The disappearance of the bollworm had encouraged the proliferation of other species of parasites, against which nothing can the toxin produced by the same cotton. To control these secondary pests now take up to 20 applications of pesticides in the course of a season. The
Bt cotton has been widely used in the four countries that are major world producers of cotton (China, United States, India and Argentina) for their economic security that seemed to provide. Today represents 35 percent of cotton crops in the world , and is widely utilizzato anche in Messico e Sud Africa.
For example, create areas of traditional cotton along the edge of cultivated fields with Bt cotton in this way we will maintain a small population of bollworm that continues to compete with other parasites keep their numbers low. It will prevent the bollworm developing resistance to Bt toxin.
assessments Mariotti coincide with those of the same authors of the study, inviting researchers and farmers to get in looking for solutions because the use of Bt cotton is not turned into reality in an even greater use of pesticides than traditional agriculture. Since the introduction of natural predators to control pests, forecasting required of those refuge areas planted with GM varieties not ; to develop more varieties of the plant can also ward off other predators. "Whether you are for or against GMOs, we must accept the fact that agriculture is a constant battle against plant pests," concludes the researcher of the CNR. "The more a plant yield, particularly the cotton is a plant very delicate, the more it is deprived of its natural defenses against parasites, and this also applies to the selection made with traditional crosses. "

What Household Things Can Men Use To

China falls from the advantage of Bt cotton

Seven years after the introduction of large scale cultivation of genetically modified cotton , the economic benefits granted to Chinese farmers from its use are gone. The reason - as reported by researchers at Cornell University the annual conference of the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) going on these days in Long Beach, California - is that new pests are massively attacking the crops Bt cotton . Bt cotton gets its name borrowed from the Bacillus thuringiensis gene inserted into plants to make them produce a toxin lethal to the larvae of Helicoverpa armigera, a moth nottuide che rappresenta uno dei più importanti parassiti del cotone. Secondo i ricercatori l’emergenza di questi parassiti “secondari” could be a serious problem for all countries that use Bt cotton on a large scale: China, India, Argentina and the United States, although in the latter country, the producers who use Bt cotton are bound by contract to cultivate a small area even in traditional cotton, which serves as a refuge for H. armigera and where to use traditional pesticides. A useful strategy to avoid the emergence of mutants resistant to Bt, but also to reduce the proliferation of other pests.

Colonization of transgenic seeds

by GreenPlanet.net
They called for the project "Biosafety 'and respect of certain countries in West Africa and Latin America. But there are good reasons to doubt, not least because among the partners are known biotech industry organizations. We are talking about two projects initiated by the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility (GEF English the acronym) managed by the same bank. The declared aim is to help ensure, in agriculture, protection against the risk of contamination among seeds originating and genetically modified seeds - under the Biosafety Protocol signed in Cartagena in 2000. The impression is that it actually promotes the introduction of GM crops . The partners involved in the two projects multimillionaires are: CIAT (International Center for Tropical Agriculture , based in Colombia) and, needless to say, three known organizations for the promotion of biotech industries related to transgenic crops: CropLife , AfricaBio and Public Research and Regulation Initiative. Under the guise of scientific research trying to legitimize contamination of seeds that are the basis of 'peasant economy to create, in the end, dependency check variety industries. The West Africa regional biosafety project covers Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Togo, while objective of Latin American multi-country capacity building in biosafety are Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru. The project involves the introduction of GM seeds corn, potatoes, yucca, rice and cotton, and yet, except rice, it is plant varieties in those countries are centers of origin and biodiversity. Can understand the alarm among local civil society organizations, aware that the transgenic contamination to which we expose crops original, fundamental to the economy of rural people is an unacceptable risk, a real threat to food sovereignty and biodiversity of those paesi.Tra the first to start the attack, with an analysis Initiative on environmental and social risks that projects represent, are: the African Centre for Biosafety (ACB), the Network for Latin America free from genetically modified (Ralltiir) and international environmental organizations and Grain Group projects include Etc. also " training in biosafety " promoted by the GEF and the World Bank. In practice, ignoring the indigenous and peasant organizations opposed to introducing GM varieties in the field, these will be "sent" to learn new scientific methods designed to counter the risk of contamination : "A farce of public participation in the real objective is to promote biosecurity laws that favor biotechnological industries' complaint Eva Caranza Coordination of Biodiversity in Costa Rica When it comes to Africa while the Latin American field trials specifically provides training for controlling contamination between GM and native plants. One wonders how they will prevent the wind to carry pollen from one crop to another, of course, in both cases, project developers assume that GM will continue to be introduced, and that contamination is inevitable - the scientific methods to combat it are smoke and mirrors. Silvia Ribeiro of ETC Group points out the transgenic contamination of native maize in Mexico, where it has been done to prevent it. Indeed, a law passed by the Mexican government on Biosafety was allowed to leave unpunished, Monsanto and other companies responsible for illegal contamination, so that has been dubbed "Monsanto Law". According to Grain, these projects respond clearly to a process that involves the direct participation of the countries involved, but that is part of a strategy of the Bank and the U.S. government to "harmonize" regional regulations on the introduction of GMOs: to establish rules supported the introduction of GMOs in key countries and use them as a model to impose on other states in the region through supranational bodies, so as to bypass any democratic debate and open a large single market for transnational producers of genetically modified seeds . The contempt for the views of peasant and indigenous organizations is also evident from the fact that both projects are moving only in English, not in French, one of the major languages of the African continent, either in English or Portuguese in Latin American case.

Mediterranean Agriculture - Tests of complementarity

Agriculture in the Mediterranean is growing fast and places long market problems. The word "magic" to deal with these nodes, and avoid becoming tensions is the "complementarity". Met with many perplexities, is now considered the only solution capable of preventing a disastrous war between the agriculture of Mediterranean countries. Fruits and vegetables are the typical products of the region and their natural markets are the countries of northern Europe. But access, in addition to being hampered by a maze of customs regulations, health and trade is controlled by importers whose bargaining power is far superior to that of producers. Under conditions of inferiority are mainly North African and Middle Eastern countries, is forced to compete with each other, both to compete with countries the European side, particularly Spain, Italy and Greece. Already heavy, the situation threatens to become explosive in 2010, with the establishment of free trade area (FTA) provided by the Barcelona Conference of 1995. In this perspective, complementarity is the only alternative to wild competition. Realize, however, is not simple. Should organize the ' productive activity so that the arrival of products on the market is spread out over time corresponding to trends in demand, so as to prevent the supply is concentrated in the same periods, and are excessive, causing the fall of producer prices. It is not sufficient though. It is also necessary that the goods having characteristics corresponding to international standards of both quality and sanitary systems, both commercial presentation. Is evident, therefore, the need for a massive modernization of production in Mediterranean countries (PTM), with the adoption of cultural methods that can exploit the typical, improve quality and ensure the wholesomeness of the products thanks application of technical production, with a low input of pesticides and low environmental impact. Appear to be essential reorganization of supply of inputs (plants, seeds , fertilizers, pesticides), both the organization of post-harvest management (storage, packing, grading, cooling, packaging) and the creation of trademarks and labels to ensure traceability, that is an indication of the main steps of the product from field to stall. In practice this is set up for each product, the 'chain . The cooperation of private actors is decisive, but can be effective only in the context of international agreements between political institutions and associations. On this land is at the forefront of Puglia, with two important cooperation projects with Egypt, one already in progress, the more ready to leave. Under the Green Corridor Italian-Egyptian, financed by the conversion of debt to Italy, Egypt, has been prepared on an experimental project that has as protagonists the Confcooperative of Puglia and the Egyptian body that is implementing the program development of rural Noubaria western area of 14 thousand hectares out of which 19 villages were built with a total population of 70 thousand inhabitants. To provide supervision and technical assistance to the project, which started in February and will be completed by next December, the Italian Embassy in Cairo, el ' Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari CIHEAM. Aims of the project is the production Noubaria of vegetables and fruit that Confcooperative of Puglia in Italy will import and distribute the European market. The agreements also include close cooperation between local technicians and those of cooperative partners Puglia. The first product is coming ' grape seedless varieties (without seeds ), which will be imported (and sold in Europe) until it is ready for the Italian market for table grapes. The second project is even more complex and demanding, and was promoted under the Support Programme for Regional Cooperation with the countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean and those in the Balkans Western Region of Puglia, which is proposed as the leader of a group of Italian regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia Calabria, Veneto Campania, Basilicata to the Emilia Romagna, Lazio to Sicily, Tuscany, Abruzzo and Sardinia. Iam participate in the implementation of Bari, Bari University, the University of Foggia and professional organizations. Egyptian partners are the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the Unit of implementation of the Agreement and the Governorates of the territories in the Delta of the Nile (Damietta and Alexandria) chosen for the location of operations. The implementation will take two years from 2007. In addition to ' import fruit and vegetables Egyptians, Egypt is expected in the recruitment of seasonal workers for work in the Italian courts. The project, which was called "Setting up integrated production systems between Italy and Egypt," will be presented to the Italian press by the Department of the Mediterranean Region of Puglia, Silvia Godelli, and the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Egypt, Hamdy Emara, who is also director of the Rural Development Programme of the Western Noubaria. The meeting with journalists has been set for June 29 next at 12, the seat of IAM Bari, Valenzano.

ASSOBIOTEC GM calls the coexistence

The Community position on the coexistence is likely to encourage transgenic contamination, compromise the future of 'European and Italian agriculture based on quality, which today represents an economic asset and invaluable biodiversity. Then use the Trojan horse of bioenergy to open to GM crops in our country would be a grave mistake. " 15 regions and over 2300 Italian municipalities are already free to defend GM 153 products DOP and IGP and 353 DOC and DOCG. Italy is also in first place in Europe for local products (4,100 the traditional food products), and organic production with 1,162,212 acres, 7% of agricultural land. 'It is absolutely necessary - Silk concludes - that our government takes a leading role instead of encouraging the European Commission to introduce a threshold of "accidental contamination" of 0.1%, which is equal to the level of detection for both All seeds, both for organic production. "

De Castro: no protectionism, barriers but anti-unfair competition

"To facilitate the consumption of Italian products is necessary to comply with the rules and regulations that prevent distortions of competition." The Minister for Agriculture, Paolo De Castro, draws the line on which to try to forge alliances within the European Union . The first test came from the Council of Agriculture Ministers which discussed the problem of relationship between organic and GMO crops . The minister explained: "The old tools for agriculture, scattered small grants, no longer needed. Spiega il ministro: «Le nostre imprese per crescere devono uscire dal mercato nazionale saturated and become stronger in overseas markets and this can become important and strategic large retailers. " De Castro takes as its model the French experience that has linked the farmers Alpine with Carrefour: "We'll have to find ways to be able to have in Italy a strategic alliance that brings our products not only on the shelves of national distribution but also in other countries. " We return to organic methods, the need to provide a legal framework of this production in Europe. Italy's position is clear: "In the field of biological claim a threshold of GMO-free seed that sia molto al di sotto dello 0,9% previsto per le colture convenzionali», spiega il ministro. Il confronto, therefore promises to be tight even if the line of Italy, which aims at reducing the current rate of tolerance can find the support of Austria, Belgium, Poland, Greece, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia and Cyprus. The front, however, could also expand to France and Spain. De Castro was asked to return in the coming weeks in Paris by French counterpart, Dominique Bussereau. The Italian minister will then meet in late June, the English counterpart, Elena Espinosa, at the summit of the International Bureau of the vine and wine (OIV). On that occasion De Castro should also address the issue of the presence of wood chips in wine. On the domestic front to the minister, during a rally in Palermo, ha annunciato la possibilità di allungare i tempi per il pagamento rateizzato del contributo unificato. Secondo De Castro «non ci sarà nessun condono tombale per le migliaia di agricoltori italiani che dovranno pagare i contributi agricoli unificati. Pagheranno, ma pagheranno il giusto e con una rateizzazione la più lunga possibile, invece dei 15 anni proposti dal ministro Alemanno, si può arrivare a 20 anni».

Luxembourg: he wants to represent "GM free"

"Noi vogliamo diventare una zona libera da Ogm", ha spiegato ai giornalisti Agriculture Minister Fernand Boden, Luxembourg, in the margins of the informal meeting of EU agriculture ministers being held in Krems in northern Austria. "I believe in Luxembourg is more reasonable that all farmers group themselves to say in a voluntary charter: not want GMOs, "he said. Moreover, he continued, "Our agriculture is very fragmented and is difficult to ensure coexistence." Boden also explained that the Government of the Grand Duchy has "prepared a bill, already submitted to the European Commission, which says that we want to become a zone free of GMOs." For the Minister of Luxembourg, there are two decisions to be taken by the EU Commission. In the first place "is required under EU rules otherwise - he said - we will not find a solution, because now everyone do what they want." Furthermore, "the European Commission should develop and propose thresholds for seed , from which distances are calculated to ensure coexistence between GM crops and GM free." Personally - Boden concluded - "I understand that some may declare itself GMO-free regions in Europe and in other hand are allowed. There is much talk of subsidiarity and within a certain framework could give them this opportunity.

GMOs. Eurobarometer: 58% of Europeans are against it. The comment by Coldiretti

21/06/2006 - Coldiretti says the results of the Eurobarometer study on biotech. According to the confederation "The results that emerge from the survey are the most important opinion that the European authorities must follow in making future choices."
Over 50% of Europeans support the use of biotechnology in medicine, while 58 out of 100 Europeans say they are opposed to development instead of GMOs in agriculture and food sectors . The study points out a Eurobarometer on bioethics. "The fact that the vast majority of European citizens - said Coldiretti - does not consider should encourage the development of GMOs in food and demonstrates the need to respect the principle of precaution and to invest in research to avoid opening the way for the risk of contaminating the environment and irreversibly damage the health of citizens ".
The results that emerge from the survey represent - supports the confederation - the most important opinion that the European authorities must follow in making the next choice, even in reference to the proposal to introduce an unacceptable threshold of contamination of agricultural seed . In Italy - says the Coldiretti - 11 regions, 2355 municipalities, 41 provinces and 50 mountain communities have already joined the campaign "GMO-free" sustained by Coldiretti to prevent contamination by biotech their territories and to preserve its natural heritage and food industries. Italy - Coldiretti concludes - with the European leader in food quality, obtained thanks to the ban on GM crops in the fields and national leadership in local and organic products, is among the European countries most affected by the principle precautions to avoid irreversible choices to the detriment of businesses and consumers.

Two seminars on organic seed

A breve sarà disponibile, sul sito di Veneto Agricoltura, lo sportello BioInforma, from which you can access databases, discussion forums, training courses e-learning and other services dedicated to the field of organic farming. The first session of the seminar aims to examine the availability of organic seeds , with particular reference to horticulture, it is expected the participation of different representatives of the sector: farmers, seed producers , responsible for certification, organic distributors. The second session will try to give some answers to the doubts about the risk of producing GMO organic farm. Will address the risk of contamination and will be shown how to enable certification "No GMO" on the company level.
