GMOs. Eurobarometer: 58% of Europeans are against it. The comment by Coldiretti

21/06/2006 - Coldiretti says the results of the Eurobarometer study on biotech. According to the confederation "The results that emerge from the survey are the most important opinion that the European authorities must follow in making future choices."
Over 50% of Europeans support the use of biotechnology in medicine, while 58 out of 100 Europeans say they are opposed to development instead of GMOs in agriculture and food sectors . The study points out a Eurobarometer on bioethics. "The fact that the vast majority of European citizens - said Coldiretti - does not consider should encourage the development of GMOs in food and demonstrates the need to respect the principle of precaution and to invest in research to avoid opening the way for the risk of contaminating the environment and irreversibly damage the health of citizens ".
The results that emerge from the survey represent - supports the confederation - the most important opinion that the European authorities must follow in making the next choice, even in reference to the proposal to introduce an unacceptable threshold of contamination of agricultural seed . In Italy - says the Coldiretti - 11 regions, 2355 municipalities, 41 provinces and 50 mountain communities have already joined the campaign "GMO-free" sustained by Coldiretti to prevent contamination by biotech their territories and to preserve its natural heritage and food industries. Italy - Coldiretti concludes - with the European leader in food quality, obtained thanks to the ban on GM crops in the fields and national leadership in local and organic products, is among the European countries most affected by the principle precautions to avoid irreversible choices to the detriment of businesses and consumers.
